Two Major Types of Dental Implants You Can Get

Dental implants are posts or frames made of metal or other materials. These are surgically positioned into the jawbone underneath your gums. They work as a foundation for the replacement teeth that your dentist will be attaching.

Dental implants are currently among the most successful tooth replacement procedures in the industry today. These implants fuse to your jawbone and provide support for artificial teeth such as dentures and bridges.

According to the American Dental Association, there are two major types of dental implants that are considered safe for just about anyone.

Subperiosteal Implants

These are implants with metal frames. The frame is fitted in the jawbone below the gum tissue. Note that when the gums heal, the frame becomes fixed to the jawbone. Next, posts are attached to the frame. Once fixed and installed, artificial teeth are then mounted on the posts.

Endosteal Implants

This is the most common type of dental implant. These implants are surgically inserted into the jawbone. When the gum heals, another surgery is performed to connect the implant with the post. Once the post is positioned, artificial teeth are mounted on it.

Should You Get Dental Implants?

Dental implants are highly successful, even more than dentures. Since they are inserted inside the gums, the foundation is solid and lets the artificial teeth function as good as normal teeth. If you are still unsure whether or not you want dental implants, then visit a professional dentist and understand the procedure to make a better decision.
